Over the next two weeks students in Years 7,8 and 9 are focusing on their organisational abilities. Part of this is being prepared for school. Students have been reminded that a calculator is required at all times. In the BSM Curriculum booklet we recommend that students have a Casio fx-991CW or Casio fx991EX. These calculators have functions that will still be useful when completing Science and Maths GCSEs in Year 10 and 11. Thank you for your continued support.
Year 9 focus: This year marks the end of Key Stage 3. Students will study units that introduce GCSE texts and begin developing preliminary skills for the CAIE IGCSE First Language English and World Literature courses, focusing on selected areas of the syllabuses.
Why this structure: This approach ensures a smooth transition into Year 10 (Key Stage 4), so your child is both well-prepared and appropriately challenged and supported.
Year 9 purpose and timeline: Your child’s data - including both attainment and progress in class and formal assessments - will inform our decision regarding their placement on either the Dual route (two IGCSEs: Language and Literature) or the Core route (Language only, which is mandatory for all) from Year 10. Within these courses, they will also be allocated to the set that is most appropriate for them academically and for their wellbeing.
Next Steps: Teachers will contact parents with any concerns and updates as needed throughout the year. The Parent Consultation Day will provide opportunities to discuss your child’s progress and teachers may also offer professional recommendations for your child's Key Stage 4 pathway.
Further information: Please see the attached KS3 Curriculum Overview, which outlines the Year 9 curriculum and assessment plan.
We have created WhatsApp groups for parents to know about urgent messages or reminders. Email will continue to be the main form of communication. Please see our BSM WhatsApp Groups Document for all the links. Please read the code of conduct carefully before joining any BSM WhatsApp groups.
